Envision Powers First Green Ammonia Ship Bunkering

In a remarkable leap toward decarbonizing the shipping industry, Envision Energy has successfully powered the world’s first marine ammonia bunkering operation using green ammonia fuel produced at its groundbreaking facility in Chifeng. The event, a first of its kind, marks the moment where theory met practice—where clean, renewable energy moved beyond the land and onto the sea.

The historic refueling was conducted at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry’s terminal in Dalian, where China Shipping & Sinopec Suppliers Co., Limited successfully filled up the first 5,500-horsepower ammonia-fueled tugboat. The fuel? Green ammonia—entirely sourced from renewable energy at Envision’s Chifeng plant, now the world’s largest green hydrogen and ammonia production base.

“This is not just a milestone—it’s a turning point,” Frank Yu, Senior Vice President of Envision Energy, commented. “It demonstrates that net zero fuels can effectively cross the bridge from renewable generation to hard-to-abate industries such as maritime shipping. This milestone demonstrates our ability to provide truly integrated solutions that substitute fossil fuels with green molecules.

At the core of this success is Envision’s Chifeng Green Hydrogen-Ammonia Project—a marvel of integrated renewable engineering. Powered by wind, solar, and advanced storage technologies, the plant converts clean energy directly into green hydrogen and ammonia. But beyond scale and efficiency, it also carries powerful credentials: it’s the world’s first project to be certified by ISCC Plus for its verified low greenhouse gas footprint, and it holds renewable ammonia certification from Bureau Veritas—testament to its environmental integrity.

The tugboat involved in the operation isn’t just a symbol—it’s a fully functional vessel equipped with state-of-the-art ammonia dual-fuel engine technology and a dedicated fuel system, achieving up to 91% substitution of conventional fuels with green ammonia. The vessel has earned the official “Ammonia Fuel Tug” classification from the China Classification Society, making it a pioneer in green marine transport.

With this successful bunkering, Dalian Port now emerges as the world’s first port capable of offering a complete suite of alternative maritime fuels, including biofuel, green methanol, LNG, and green ammonia. It’s not just a local win—it positions Dalian as a new energy hub for Northeast Asia and strengthens global logistics chains with cleaner options.

More importantly, the operation has demonstrated that a complete value chain—from production to real-world application—can now be built around green ammonia. Envision’s role in connecting all the dots showcases a future where fossil fuels are no longer necessary to power global trade.

By bringing renewable molecules to the high seas, Envision Energy isn’t just imagining a cleaner future—it’s building it, one fuel cell at a time.
