In a move that reflects the growing momentum of consolidation within the plastics manufacturing space, Indiana-based Adkev has officially acquired Winzeler Gear, a renowned gear producer headquartered in Harwood Heights, Illinois.
This deal brings together two companies with deep roots in precision injection molding, particularly within the automotive industry. For Adkev—a family-owned business that’s been steadily expanding its footprint since its founding in 1987—this marks a strategic and symbolic milestone: its first-ever acquisition.
Winzeler Gear’s story stretches back to 1940, when it began as a manufacturer of stamped metal gears in Chicago. In the decades that followed, it evolved into a global leader in high-volume, injection molded plastic gears. Today, its facility in Harwood Heights produces over 150 million gears annually, serving critical roles in vehicle systems such as seating, HVAC, and steering. Its long-time president and CEO, John Winzeler, is stepping into retirement after nearly 40 years at the company’s helm.

Adkev, led by founder Gary Rheude, brings a complementary skill set and a larger operational footprint to the table—with three U.S. plants and nearly 600,000 square feet of manufacturing space. Known for its work in automotive, appliance, and industrial sectors, Adkev’s acquisition of Winzeler not only deepens its automotive capabilities but also positions the combined entity as a more versatile and vertically integrated supplier.
The two companies already operate in closely aligned sectors, and this union will enable them to deliver more comprehensive solutions for complex actuator systems—from steering and sunroof components to door handles and mirrors. Beyond automotive, they also aim to expand into broader industrial and consumer markets.

Importantly, the transition will be smooth for employees and customers alike. All of Winzeler’s staff will remain on board, and operations at the Harwood Heights plant will continue without disruption. Customers can expect uninterrupted service as Adkev begins a new chapter, backed by the legacy and expertise of Winzeler Gear.
The transaction was facilitated by MBS Advisors, a plastics-specialized investment banking firm based in Florence, Massachusetts.
This deal not only signals Adkev’s intent to grow, but also underscores the importance of strategic partnerships in an industry where precision, scale, and reliability are everything.
