Agate Becomes Primak Construction in Strategic Spin-Off

Agate Becomes Primak Construction in Strategic Spin-Off

After more than five decades of shaping Arizona’s construction landscape, Agate Construction is turning a bold new page. The long-standing general contracting firm has officially rebranded as Primak Construction Group (PCG)—a move that signals not only a new name but also a significant strategic evolution.

This transformation stems from a thoughtfully structured business “spin-off” between partners Rick Nichols and Lou Primak, both of whom have been instrumental in building the Agate legacy. As part of the transition, Lou Primak will take full ownership of the general contracting business under the new Primak Construction Group banner, while Nichols will now focus entirely on Agate Steel, a well-respected structural steel fabrication and erection company based in Scottsdale, Arizona.

But the change is more than cosmetic. It’s a recalibration—designed to eliminate marketplace confusion and allow both entities to pursue focused, independent paths with greater agility and vision.

“This isn’t just a name change—it’s a new beginning that aligns with where we’re going and how we intend to grow,” said Lou Primak, who now leads PCG as president and COO. “We’re building on Agate’s strong foundation, while creating a modern, agile company that is ready to serve the complex needs of tomorrow’s construction industry.”

With its new Phoenix headquarters, Primak Construction Group will expand its activities as a full-service general contractor, design-builder, and construction manager to the Southwest and Mountain West markets. Its project list remains ambitious and diverse—ranging from aviation hangars to mining infrastructure, industrial facilities, mixed-use developments, and public works.

The transition also brings exciting opportunities for leadership development and ownership succession. Key team members, including Andy Platt, Bart Bates, Steve Johnson, and Zane Serrano, remain in enhanced roles, ensuring continuity and stability. Meanwhile, industry veteran Mark Adams, a nearly 50-year Agate contributor, will continue to support client services in a special role with PCG.

For Nichols, this move brings clarity and renewed focus to Agate Steel. “This restructuring allows both teams to thrive independently with purpose,” he said. “Lou has the passion and leadership to take the construction business forward, and I’m proud to cheer them on.”

Primak, who credits much of his leadership approach to early mentorship from Agate founder Jim Uhl—a decorated Marine officer—emphasized that while the name is changing, the company’s core values are not.

“Jim always told us, ‘The business of construction is construction,’ and that’s truer than ever,” said Primak. “We’re staying grounded in the fundamentals, while preparing to grow and innovate for the future.”

With a renewed identity, a strong leadership team, and a growing footprint across the region, Primak Construction Group is setting the stage for the next era of smart, disciplined, and people-first construction.
