Ireland Rail Upgrade to Boost Connectivity and Sustainability

A major leap forward is underway for Ireland’s rail infrastructure, as Jacobs has been appointed to help shape the future of a crucial regional route. In partnership with Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail), Jacobs will play a central role in modernizing the 87-mile corridor connecting Galway to Portarlington—ultimately improving travel toward Dublin and beyond.

This project isn’t just about laying down more tracks. It’s about transforming how people and communities connect across the Western region of Ireland. With the growing demand for faster, more frequent, and sustainable transport, the initiative aligns with the broader ambitions set out in the All Island Strategic Rail Review—prioritizing decarbonization, accessibility, and a better overall experience for passengers.

At the core of Jacobs’ work will be early-stage consultancy—exploring what’s possible, what’s practical, and what will drive the greatest long-term value. This includes assessing everything from boosting capacity and increasing train speeds to reducing emissions and enhancing reliability. The initial agreement spans four years, with the potential to extend even further—marking this as a long-term, future-focused investment in national mobility.

Jacobs Executive Vice President Keith Lawson emphasized the complexity and importance of this initiative, noting how it requires a blend of transport expertise, environmental foresight, community input, and urban planning. It’s a task that demands more than technical know-how—it needs an integrated, human-centered approach.

For Iarnród Éireann, this is also a step toward climate responsibility. CEO Jim Meade shared his enthusiasm for the project, pointing to its potential to reduce car dependence while making reliable rail access a reality for more communities across the country.

The project is part of Ireland’s broader vision under Project Ireland 2040 and the National Development Plan. With support from the National Transport Authority, it reflects a national commitment to more compact urban growth, sustainable mobility, and a climate-resilient future.

Jacobs’ deep experience in delivering transformative rail projects worldwide—from the Elizabeth line in the UK to the Grand Central Madison project in NYC—makes them a natural partner in this bold Irish undertaking. Their continued presence across Ireland, contributing to key infrastructure programs like BusConnects and the Dunkettle Interchange, reinforces their role in building not just better transport, but better-connected communities.

As Ireland prepares for a more mobile, sustainable future, this project represents more than an upgrade—it’s a symbol of progress, ambition, and possibility.
